I passed the final exam today on MOSS 2007 and so I’m a Microsoft Certified Technical Specialist (MCTS) on Sharepoint now. There were two exams during the course, one on WSS 3.0 and the other on MOSS 2007. I learnt loads more about Sharepoint which hopefully I’ll be able to put to good use on future projects. I fancy doing the developer course now with Combined Knowledge.

Thanks Suze, you see I’m taking your advice and specialising. Interestingly enough there were two other SBSC Partners at the training, Stanley Yau (Aberdeen) and Matt Frye (Bristol) and it was great to spend time with these guys and exchange views. It’s funny how two Community focused SBSers can meet for the first time and instantly have a connection through our Community. It’s great!

Thanks Mark. The course was available to Certified Partners and above at a subsidised rate. I think there might still be sessions you can sign on for. I’ve been working on a MOSS 2007 development project for a few months so I was fairly familiar with certain parts of Sharepoint. The course is very focused on the exams and to be honest the exams were not too hard. Most people were working with Sharepoint on the course. There are loads of good resources online for Sharepoint and books as well.

Cheers Steve. I’ve been discussing with Steve Smith who is a Sharepoint MVP, runs the Sharepoint User Group and owns a business doing Sharepoint Training (Combined Knowledge) in Leicestershire about doing some free training sessions for SBSC Partners at Ullesthorpe Hotel (which is where he does his training courses). No problem, I’ll do some overviews of Sharepoint in the New Year.

Congrats dude.. I dig that UK can recognize the potential behind SharePoint, in USA its far (far, far) behind and people are just not willing to use portals.. or rather, continue to use portals. The dig it initially but revert to the old ways quickly.

Cheers Vlad, appreciate it. It’s interesting that you say that UK is ahead of the US. There are loads of Corporates in the UK deploying MOSS 2007. I’ve met quite a few developers working on these projects. I guess the question is how do we make money out of it in the SMB space? I like the Internet facing side of it and the ability to brand that using Master Pages, CSS and the Web Content Management features. It’s not perfect but Microsoft have done a seriously good job on it and I can’t wait to see the next version.

Frankly, we view it as any other development / custom design job. There are always people that are willing to pay for the system that works with their business process and eliminates waste of bureaucracy associated with the way things are now.
SMBs tend to be few and far in between when it comes to that, but the M part of it is generally interested in spending money on it.
My challenge, prior to the ExchangeDefender and Shockey Monkey and the other things we are currently building has been the issue of talent. Some projects may require 2-3 people, some can take up to 10 people on my staff cranking out code. Without a steady set of software being sold by your house, that keeps the payroll and the lights on, its very difficult to make it between the projects.
At least it was like that for me. Growing pains…
